The Calf Muscle(s)

What we commonly think of as 'the calf muscle' is actually three muscles, of which the soleus is only one. The other main muscle is the gastrocnemius (pronunciation of the 'c' appears to be optional!). The soleus is on the inside, the gastrocnemius on the outside; these two muscles together form the triceps surae ('the three–headed [muscle] of the calf'). The third muscle is the plantaris, which is believed to have become unimportant when our human ancestors switched from climbing trees to walking on two legs.
